The Vue Pointe Hotel was opened in
December of 1961. It was designed and built by Michael “Gen” Osborne
assisted by his son Cedric R. Osborne, the present Managing Director. The
hotel is located on a 5-acre bluff over looking Old Road Bay Beach and the
Belham Valley. From the hotel, there are spectacular views of the
Caribbean Sea, the Soufriere Hills Volcano, and the surrounding
mountains.
Prior to the devastation of Hurricane
Hugo in September of 1989, the hotel offered 28 spacious cottages and 12
motel style rooms. During Hugo, the hotel was severely damaged. The roofs
over the Main Building and Bar, the Conference Centre, seven cottages and
four rooms were all destroyed. By 1994, we had rebuilt all but four rooms.
In July of 1995, Montserrat was
surprised by the eruption of our Soufriere Hills Volcano. Since that time
we have relocated several times. Many inhabitants have lost their homes
and valuable agricultural land and many have had to rebuild in the
northern third of the island. Eventually over 7,000 Montserratians
migrated to other countries to seek employment, housing and education for
their children.
The Vue Pointe Hotel was closed for the
first time in August of 1997 due to the escalation of volcanic activity.
We employed 67 staff at that time and have sadly seen almost all of them
migrate due to social and economic hardship.
In September of 1998, the Government of
Montserrat, on consultation with the Montserrat Volcano Observatory,
deemed Old Towne to be once again safe for occupation. By December 2000,
we had completely renovated 14 cottages and fitted some of them with fully
equipped kitchenettes.
In October of 2002 the
scientists decided that once again, Old Towne may be in danger and we had
to close the Vue Pointe and evacuate. We were allowed to reoccupy the
hotel in August of 2003 after a major dome collapse of the volcano, which
occurred on the 12th July 2003. Since that time, we have been refurbishing
the hotel to be able to once again, welcome overnight guests.
Facilities at the Vue Pointe Hotel
include a fresh water swimming pool, shuffle board, tennis court,
paperback library, the Sea Wolf Diving School, the Jumping Jack Beach bar and
Carol's Corner Gift Shop.
Our restaurant in the Main Building is
open and is offering breakfast, lunch and dinner daily.
Our Michael “Gen” Osborne Conference
Centre can accommodate over 150 persons in four air conditioned meeting
rooms, where business mixes nicely with pleasure.
Taxi tours and rental jeeps can be
arranged by request.
We are very grateful to our Caribbean
staff who have weathered the last few years with us. They are here to
ensure that your stay is pleasant and your requests are met.
